Well, now there is no time to waste! I need to start planning the first bridal shower. First things first I need a list of the guest & I need a date that would not conflict with the other 10 weddings going on within our circle of friends. No easy feat, but we pick a date in April. I book the shower at one of our favorite resturants Basiles. Now to get all the bridesmaids to help with the task at hand.
Well, now we are getting ready to plan the 2nd enagement party!! The family is ready to string me up somewhere. They are very upset that my family is costing them to much money at one time. I think WOW ! Are they kidding I will most likely be poor by the time this is over. So we go back to the same party room that we had for the 1st engagement party. The food was excellent & the owners were very nice. We use the same DJ of course & change the menu a little bit. We also add a little cocktail hour. It actually cost us a little less then the 1st party. The parents of the groom helped out this time! YAY! All went well.
Time to go wedding gown shopping. We had stacks of BRIDES Magazine everyone you could think of. I think they started overtaking the house. I remember when I was getting married, we went to NYC on Broadway to the Bridal Building. Every designer was there, floors & floors of gowns. So off we went me & bride #1 in early September on a Saturday morning to NYC.
When we got there I was very disappointed. There were only 3 bridal stores in the whole building…the building was almost empty. I felt like I was in a ghost town compared to when I was getting my dress 25 yrs. ago. My daughter was crying thinking she was not going to get a dress & she had her heart set on getting her dress that day. She had all her favorite picks with her from all the bride magazines. She wanted a Demetrios! I must say he is also my top pick, I had a Demetrios gown myself.
We tried a couple of dresses on, but , they were not the one. Also I was no way going to buy a dress from a store in a half abandon building. I asked around & found out that Macys sells Demetrios. So off we went two blocks down to Macy’s!
I was so happy that my daughter was smiling again! We tried on a bunch of dresses. Every picture she had we tried on. We found it! The perfect dress! It looked beautiful on her & of course I was crying. We brought the dress with the most beautiful veil & tiera. She looked like a princess!
While we were there I decided to try on some dresses for me too. I found a few a liked, but decided to wait, because I was going to the gym & going to lose some weight !….Good thing I waited because I still didn’t know I was expecting #7!! Remember we went dress shopping in early September, I didn’t find out I was excepting till November.
I was having a great time going to bridal shows & looking for dresses. I was thinking life is going to get so much easier. My sons are 8 & 13 & two of my daughters will be getting married. I was busy having a good time with them. I never expected to become pregnant with another baby. I was thinking we would be grandparents soon. I don’t even want to tell anyone, because, I really don’t want to hear the rude comments. “Don’t you have TV”, Can’t you control yourself”, Your pregnant again”. Well, I don’t get the TV comment, does that mean people with TV don’t have sex? I don’t think we have any more sex then anyone else. We are just very fortunate to be very fertile. I know so many people who would be so happy to have just 1 baby, & they can’t. Yet because we have more then 3 kids we get every rude comment you could think of.
Now I have to tell my husband. Only I don’t know how or when to tell him. We were starting to think we would be grandparents soon. Now at 50 years old I have to tell him he is going to be a daddy again. It took me a couple of weeks to tell him. Well when I finally told him he took it quite well. I thought he would be upset, but he wasn’t. He was shocked but not upset. I think I was the one more upset. I was just starting to feel like we would get some freedom soon. Now I am going to have to get up during the night to a crying baby.
We decided to wait a couple of more weeks before we told the kids or anyone. The only person we told was my good friend, the one whose daughter was also getting married. She does sonograms & she did one for me before I even got to the doctors.
Well now it is time to tell the kids. I don’t think they are going to be happy, except for my 8 year old. He has been asking me for a brother for a few months now. (course I told him NO) SoI make a big family breakfast, everyone loves my pancakes. My oldest teases me why am I making a big family breakfast? I must be having a baby. Well, I told her we are. At first everyone thought I was kidding with them. But, they quickly realized that I was serious. My youngest was so excited. He yelled out my prayers were answered, I prayed everyday! So the kids were pretty excited about a new baby in the house. They also said I should make a movie. “Father of the Bride 1 & 1/2″
Well, the engagement party turned out great. Everyone had a good time. The music was good & the food was delicious.
We are now in October and the 2nd groom to be has asked us permission to marry our other daughter. They have been dating for a few years. We know our daughter is going to be very happy. He doesn’t actually ask her till November. He planned to take her to NYC to see ”The Little Mermaid“. Only there was one problem the broadway stage hands went on strike. So it didn’t go as planned for them, but they still got engaged only at a local resturant instead.
The night of their engagement was quite memorable for me. I took an Early Pregnancy Test while they were out having dinner. I was late & getting nervous. I thought I was starting my changes, but, I just wanted to make sure that was all it was. Well it WASN”T I was PREGNANT with #7. Now I’m thinking, how am I going to tell everyone? How can I be pregnant when my daughters are getting married? I have been going to the gym so I can look good for the weddings. Now I am going to look like a whale!
We looked at the Holiday Inn at the shore it is not a good place for the week of July 4th. Out of town guests would have to pay $250 per night to stay over & we have a lot of out of town guests. Also there is no valet parking. It is not so much that I have to have valet parking, but, the hotel will be packed with beach bums everywhere in the month of July. So that would mean the parking lot will be vey crowded. I told my daughter no way for that place. We told her to show us the place she loves. We drive 1 hour south of our house & she shows us “Luicens Manor”. WOW! What a beautiful place, a big difference from the “Holiday Inn”. Of cause they picked the smallest room. You have to cross over the dance floor to get to the bar. We are also expecting close to 200 people. The room max is 200. You never want to use a room to its max. The reason for this is you will have very little room to move around. I see the bigger room & get the place to lower their minimum from 200 guarantees to 175. The room’s max is 300. We book it after I get them to throw in for FREE an ice sculptor, pasta course, fillet mingon, & a carving for the cocktail hour. My daughter is so happy!
I have always been good with planning parties. I truly enjoy it. It really isn’t that hard. Never be afraid to ask the place to throw things in for you . Or better yet give you a cheaper price! Click here for a guide to help you plan your special event for less!
Well, here we are already in August! I need to plan & send out invitations to the engagement party. I book a small very nice party room with about 75 people on the guest list. That is the best way to go, not to big, not to small. No mess & craziness for me! All I have to do is get centerpieces, favors & a DJ. Then I just show up & go home like a lady. No hassle of cooking or cleaning. Of cause I make chocolate long stem roses for the favors. I find great centerpieces on sale. Ahh, I have a friend that is a DJ & offered to DJ for FREE!! The invitations we print ourselves on the computer. A great money saving idea. My daughter the pastry chef makes the cake. Now just to get the guests to RSVP!
My first daughter got engaged July 2007. I am thinking, finally I’m going to get a little room in the house. After all we are a family of 8 in a 4 bedroom house. My oldest daughter will finally get her own room. A July 2008 wedding is being planned. Let the fun begin!! We start going to all the bridal shows.
A couple of weeks later her best friend gets engaged too. Her friend’s mom is also my really good friend. Both families are really close. Their weddings are going to be ONE month apart. Of course they will both be in each others bridal parties. Oh, and lets not forget my other daughter, she will also be in both wedding parties! This is going to be an insane year!
